Assessing the frequency and experience of bullying or peer victimization in children with Muscular Dystrophy and Congenital Myopathies
One in 3 kids in Canada get bullied for reasons like how they look or talk. Kids get bullied in person and online. We think bullying might happen more to kids with Muscular Dystrophy/Congenital Myopathy, but no one has asked them about it yet. We want to find out how often kids with Muscular Dystrophy/ Congenital Myopathy get bullied and how it affects their life. If we know when, where and how kids with Muscular Dystrophy/Congenital Myopathy get bullied, we can help kids feel better if they get bullied, or even stop it. Sharing your experiences with us will help.
This study looks at two different versions of Bootle Band (a touchscreen version, and a version where you can play real-life musical instruments) to understand which is more enjoyable for children. In both versions, children manipulate virtual instruments to help the Bootles reach stardom. Bootle Band includes multiplayer support if your child wishes to play with their siblings or friends. We want to know if designing an audio interface which can detect real-life instruments would be more enjoyable than a traditional touchscreen.

The Childhood Cerebral Palsy (CP) Integrated Neuroscience Discovery Network “CP-NET” is designed to bring together children with CP, their families, and clinical and basic scientists to foster neuroscience discoveries through integrated translation. Understanding the underlying neuroscience mechanisms, pathology, physiology, and genomics of CP is critical to developing improved treatments. In particular there is a critical need to link translationally-oriented neuroscience research with cutting-edge neurorehabilitation approaches for CP.

Enhancing Care for Young People with Muscular Dystrophy: Addressing the Human Dimensions of Progressive Illness Experience
This project aims to explore and enhance compassionate care for young people with muscular dystrophy (MD) and their families.
We want to understand your experiences looking for work or being employed. Specifically, we want to understand your experiences with coping in a competitive work environment. In addition, we want to learn about disability disclosure and how youth with disabilities ask for accommodations in the workplace.
Health and wellness are important aspects of the care provided to children and youth with CP at Holland Bloorview. Yet despite its importance incorporating a wellness approach into clinical practice remains a challenge. Barriers such as lack of resources and time, uncertainty regarding how to prioritize wellness aims, and how to address the diverse and individual needs of children and families, can interfere with wellness promotion. Our study will partner with clinicians, children and families to collaboratively identify and attend to the wellness needs and aspirations of children with CP and families , toward the delivery of holistic, family and child-centred care. In this study “wellness” refers to the emotional, existential, social, and moral dimensions of illness experiences and care that co-exist with the physical/biological and technical dimensions. Our goal in the study is to partner with practitioners, young people and families to explore what wellness means to them, how wellness does/can align with clinical care, and to identify approaches, techniques and tools for collaboratively enhancing wellness.
This study is testing how easy it is to set up and use a new wireless vocal cord vibration switch and how helpful the training materials are. The switch has a sensor in a neckband that detects when a user makes a ‘hum’ sound.
We are currently recruiting youth with brain lesions for a research study on brain-computer interfaces. This research will contribute to the development of personalized assistive devices such as communication aids and neuroprosthetic devices for individuals with brain lesions. This study aims to investigate how structural properties of the brain can be used to enhance the decoding of brain activity during movement tasks. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be used to model the structure of the head, and electroencephalography (EEG) will be used to monitor electrical brain activity.

The research team at Holland Bloorview developed an e-Learning module called Teach ABI. This module is created for educators to support students with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The objective is to raise Ontario educators’ awareness and knowledge of ABI and promote positive outcomes for children with ABI in the education system.
We have learnt that children with disabilities and weight management and wellness needs, along with their families often experience challenges and difficulties accessing health and wellness support and/or weight programs.
Our genomics study will identify and characterize genes that confer risk to autism spectrum and related neurodevelopmental disorders.
Group Social ABCs for toddlers with suspected or diagnosed Autism: Evaluation of a clinic-based behavioural intervention
We are studying a shortened, group version of the Social ABCs to see if it works. Parents will learn the strategies of the intervention through a combination of group workshops and individual practice sessions over a six-week period.

We hope to develop a new way to access communication for children who have difficulty communicating or are unable to communicate using speech alone. We are developing a device that aims to distinguish between brain activation and rest. You will be able to track your brain activity in real time with a moving toy car using two different styles of tasks. First by thinking of the things you like and secondly, without thinking, which can be achieved with practice.

Safe transportation of children with physical disabilities is essential for their participation in daily activities. This study explores how parents of children with physical disabilities in Ontario are currently transporting their children. The goal is to support advocacy efforts to ensure children with disabilities have access to services and equipment that will allow them to be transported safely.
This study looks at two different “apps” to help young people practice fine motor skills at home – Dexteria and Spell Tracer. In both apps, kids trace patterns on a tablet. Spell Tracer includes many features similar to video games. We want to know if designing therapy games to be more like entertainment video games impacts kids’ experience of the activity.
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent cause of physical disability in children in Canada, affecting 2-2.5/1000 children every year. This project aims to establish a Canadian Cerebral Palsy Registry, to provide an epidemiologic profile of CP in Canada reflecting the full heterogeneity of the disorder and provide a platform for population-based research on CP. It will serve to estimate the incidence, prevalence and distribution of cerebral palsy in Canada, while facilitating research in this field.

We are asking children and youth with cerebral palsy to help us learn about if they hurt and if it affects them. This study will help us better understand about if and how much pain is felt by children and youth with cerebral palsy.
Usability Study - Teaching Educators about Acquired Brain Injury (Teach-ABI): A Healthier Classroom for All
The NOvEL Lab is conducting usability testing of an online e-Learning module for Ontario educators about acquired brain injury (Teach-ABI). The objective of the Teach-ABI module is to raise Ontario educators’ awareness and knowledge of ABI and promote positive outcomes for children with ABI in the education system.
We are currently recruiting typically developing adolescents for a research study on brain-computer interfaces. This study will use electroencephalography (EEG), which is a method that measures brain activity from sensors placed on a cap worn on the head. We want to use these EEG measurements to determine when someone has something to say. In the future we hope that this technology can enable youth with severe motor impairments to participate in conversation.
What are the Mental Health and Wellness Needs of Young Adults with Spina Bifida? A Stakeholder Engagement Workshop
Researchers from the Bloorview Research Institute would like to invite you to take part in a study about mental health and wellness in young adults with spina bifida. Parents of children or youth with spina bifida are invited to participate in a focus group to discuss findings from a review of the research literature about mental health and wellness in young adults with spina bifida.
We will study the needs, challenges, and approaches used to position preschoolers with disabilities for bathing activities at home. Focus groups with groups of parents and therapists will give us a practical way to evaluate and develop better bath products for young children with seating needs.
Workplace disability disclosure decisions among youth and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder
In this study, we are looking to explore the needs of youth with autism related to making disclosure decisions about their autism diagnosis at work. We want to know what youth need to help make disclosure decisions in the workplace.
