The Childhood Cerebral Palsy (CP) Integrated Neuroscience Discovery Network “CP-NET” is designed to bring together children with CP, their families, and clinical and basic scientists to foster neuroscience discoveries through integrated translation. Understanding the underlying neuroscience mechanisms, pathology, physiology, and genomics of CP is critical to developing improved treatments.  In particular there is a critical need to link translationally-oriented neuroscience research with cutting-edge neurorehabilitation approaches for CP. 
We are looking into a better design for communication aid displays. We hope this will allow
people who rely on communication aids communicate faster with less frustration.

Health and wellness are important aspects of the care provided to children and youth with CP at Holland Bloorview. Yet despite its importance incorporating a wellness approach into clinical practice remains a challenge.  Barriers such as lack of resources and time, uncertainty regarding how to prioritize wellness aims, and how to address the diverse and individual needs of children and families, can interfere with wellness promotion. Our study will partner with clinicians, children and families to collaboratively identify and attend to the wellness needs  and aspirations of children with CP and families , toward the delivery of holistic, family and child-centred care. In this study “wellness” refers to the emotional, existential, social, and moral dimensions of illness experiences and care that co-exist with the physical/biological and technical dimensions.  Our goal in the study is to partner with practitioners, young people and families to explore what wellness means to them, how wellness does/can align with clinical care, and to identify approaches, techniques and tools for collaboratively enhancing wellness.
This study is testing how easy it is to set up and use a new wireless vocal cord vibration switch and how helpful the training materials are.  The switch has a sensor in a neckband that detects when a user makes a ‘hum’ sound.
We want youth’s input on their experiences of working, volunteering and unemployment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The research team at Holland Bloorview developed an e-Learning module called Teach ABI. This module is created for educators to support students with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). We have learnt that children with disabilities and weight management and wellness needs, along with their families often experience challenges and difficulties accessing health and wellness support and/or weight programs.

Our genomics study will identify and characterize genes that confer risk to autism spectrum and related neurodevelopmental disorders.
We are studying a shortened, group version of the Social ABCs to see if it works. Parents will learn the strategies of the intervention through a combination of group workshops and individual practice sessions over a six-week period.

We want employers’ input in evaluating an evidence-based toolkit to help employers to engage in disability disclosure discussions with their employees, helping to enhance disability confidence and sensitivity.

We are collecting information to help in our understanding of how genes, brain and bodies are different if a person has a neurodevelopmental disorder or is typically developing.

The research team at Holland Bloorview is developing a simulated environment assessment to help youth with concussion return to their sport life (return-to-play). The software R2Play will be designed using your thoughts and feedback. This study involves participating one hour interview session at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

This study looks at two different “apps” to help young people practice fine motor skills at home – Dexteria and Spell Tracer. In both apps, kids trace patterns on a tablet.  Spell Tracer includes many features similar to video games.  We want to know if designing therapy games to be more like entertainment video games impacts kids’ experience of the activity.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent cause of physical disability in children in Canada, affecting 2-2.5/1000 children every year. This project aims to establish a Canadian Cerebral Palsy Registry, to provide an epidemiologic profile of CP in Canada reflecting the full heterogeneity of the disorder and provide a platform for population-based research on CP. It will serve to estimate the incidence, prevalence and distribution of cerebral palsy in Canada, while facilitating research in this field.
We want to explore what health and wellness means to young people with spina bifida and what health activities are important in their everyday lives. We want to hear about what sort of things you do or want to do to be healthy and feel good.
We want parents/guardians (any adult family member in a caregiving role) of Bloorview clients ages 12 to 25 to complete a 5-minute survey two times to tell us what they think of their child’s transition readiness.
Our team would like to learn about transportation experiences of youth with and without disabilities. We would particularly like to know what it is like to navigate public transportation independently and / or the process of obtaining a driver's license.

We are asking children and youth with cerebral palsy to help us learn about if they hurt and if it affects them. This study will help us better understand about if and how much pain is felt by children and youth with cerebral palsy.
The NOvEL Lab is conducting usability testing of an online e-Learning module for Ontario educators about acquired brain injury (Teach-ABI). The objective of the Teach-ABI module is to raise Ontario educators’ awareness and knowledge of ABI and promote positive outcomes for children with ABI in the education system.

Researchers from the Bloorview Research Institute would like to invite you to take part in a study about mental health and wellness in young adults with spina bifida. Parents of children or youth with spina bifida are invited to participate in a focus group to discuss findings from a review of the research literature about mental health and wellness in young adults with spina bifida.
We will study the needs, challenges, and approaches used to position preschoolers with disabilities for bathing activities at home. Focus groups with groups of parents and therapists will give us a practical way to evaluate and develop better bath products for young children with seating needs.
In this study, we are looking to explore the needs of youth with autism related to making disclosure decisions about their autism diagnosis at work. We want to know what youth need to help make disclosure decisions in the workplace.
