Neuromotor services

This Child Development team works with children who have neuromotor disorders. 

The Neuromotor team works with clients who require an assessment where a primary concern is motor based or physical in nature and have complex medical /developmental needs:

To meet the complex needs of these children, youth and their families’ our developmental pediatricians will assess, support diagnosis, and provide consultation on interventions that may be available at Holland Bloorview or at one of our partnering healthcare organizations. Based on individual needs and functional goals, your child may qualify for assessment or therapy services which can include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers and speech-language pathologists which may be in collaboration with our community partners to provide a continuum of care.  Clients of the Neuromotor program are also eligible to therapeutic and recreational programs.

In order to be eligible for this service a Physician referral is required and the client must meet all the following:

Criteria:
  • Live in the Toronto area 
  • Referrals are recommended as early as possible, no later than 6 months before the child’s 18th birthday as wait times may vary 
  • Services are offered in the program until their 19th birthday  only if seen by an MD before their 18th birthday
  • Present with specific neuromotor concerns, which could include a query or confirmed diagnosis of cerebral palsy; AND/OR 
  • With significant delay in two or more areas of development (must include a motor delay)

Note: The client/family must be aware of the referral

What to bring to the appointment:
  • Your child’s Health Card. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care requires us to validate your health card at every clinic visit.
  • In order for the team to complete a full assessment bring your child’s orthotics, wheelchair and walking aids. Older clients may be more comfortable in shorts during the assessment. 
  • A list or pictures of your child’s equipment at home. 
  • As the appointment may be long please bring items to engage your child. 
  • Any notes or questions that you may have. 
  • List of current medications and allergies.
  • Any other forms related to your child’s care, such as reports from previous assessments, letters, school information and any previous imaging.
