Welcome to the Effective Listening and Interactive Communication Scales (ELICS)

The two Effective Listening and Interactive Communication Scale (ELICS) assessments are designed to measure the listening and communication behaviours of healthcare providers. The ELICS assessments were developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians from the Bloorview Research Institute and Thames Valley Children's Centre.

There are two versions of the ELICS measure to date, which are available for free download:

  1. The Effective Listening and Interactive Communication Scale: The ELICS is a formal self-assessment tool for clinicians to rate their listening skills. Click here to read more about the ELICS.
  2. The Effective Listening and Interactive Communication Scale - Assessment Rubric: The ELICS-AR is a formal observational assessment tool for observers to rate clinicians’ displayed listening skills. Click here to read more about the ELICS-AR.

More detailed information about this work is also available on the ELICS website at CLEARcommunication.ca
