The Independence Program (TIP) is a 3-week residential immersive life skills program for youth with disabilities 17 - 18 years of age (up to 21 if still in high school).  While living in a college residence setting together, participants will engage in workshops and experiential learning to strengthen independence skills and prepare for future life as an adult.

Criteria: applicant must have a disability and be:

  • 17 – 18 years of age (up to 21 if still in high school)
  • Able to identify and communicate personal care needs
  • Motivated to participate
  • Hoping to increase independence and work on life skills goals

Clients will experience: 

  • living in a college residence setting 
  • sharing common space with a roommate 
  • budgeting and shopping for groceries
  • preparing own meals in small groups or with roommate
  • learning to advocate for self and direct personal care (if applicable)
  • navigating safely in the community using transit
  • socializing in a small group setting and learning with and from peers
  • small in person group workshops and experiential hands on learning

How to get involved:

Clients must be on the Transitions, Recreation and Life Skills waitlist in order to be considered for this program. Clients may self-refer to services. Clients will participate in a new screening appointment to determine their interest and eligibility for services.

The Independence Program runs is offered every summer from the end of July to mid-August. Upcoming summer dates made available no later than January 1st.
