About the spinal cord injury program

The spinal cord Injury (SCI) inpatient program cares for children 0-18 years of age who have sustained either traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injuries.

The spinal cord injury team provides clinical assessment, education and interventions to promote independence in mobility, activities of daily living and transition to home and community living including school. The spinal cord injury team uses a multi-disciplinary, family centered approach which includes family team goal planning. The rehabilitation program involves daily scheduled therapy sessions, attendance at school at our onsite facility and participation in therapeutic recreation in the evenings.

The program provides education for clients and families in all aspects of their medical and nursing care needs in preparation for their transition to home.

Services are provided by a pediatrician, nurse practitioner, nurses, physiatrist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, seating specialist, dietician, social worker, child life specialist, therapeutic recreation specialist, teacher, transition school liaison coordinator, and Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN) coordinator and transitional care coordinator.

Additional services as needed include psychiatrist, psychologist, advanced practice nurse educator, respiratory therapist, speech and language pathologist, communication and writing aid specialist, therapeutic clowns, orthotics, and spiritual care facilitator.

The team facilitates care for the client and family by communicating and coordinating care with community partners and services, medical facilities and government agencies.
