Who are Family as Faculty?
Family as Faculty are Family Leaders who have been trained to use their lived experiences to teach, train, and educate a variety of learners, including clinicians, students, and families. This role was named as a leading practice by Health Standards Organization, and Holland Bloorview’s training course was considered the first known program of its kind in Canada to prepare families with lived experience in disability to take on “faculty” roles in a learning environment.

How to become a trained Family as Faculty
Holland Bloorview’s Teaching and Facilitation Course for Family as Faculty is a professional development program for people who use their lived experience as patients or caregivers in their volunteer roles as patient/family advisors, partners, or advocates.
This innovative series of virtual workshops prepares patient/family partners to co-teach and co-facilitate learning around the experience of disability. Family as Faculty help healthcare providers and social service professionals to build knowledge of the lived experiences of disability communities and to enhance family-centred care competencies. They also foster peer-to-peer learning among individuals with similar lived experiences in the healthcare system.
This training course is available to:
- Active Family Leaders of Holland Bloorview
- Patient / Family advisors, partners, or advocates at external health organizations (for participants from external organizations, a fee will apply)
