“Recreation is a right for all.”
Therapeutic recreation specialist Lindsey White shares how therapeutic recreation helps families learn about the possibilities the future can hold.
When I began working as a therapeutic recreation specialist at Holland Bloorview, I met a child whose family was going through a tough time.
Some of my favourite memories in all my time at Holland Bloorview are of working with this client, who was staying inpatient at the hospital and adjusting to life with an acquired disability. I had the honour of watching them practice self expression and discover new passions through sewing, drawing, clay, and their favourite, painting.
Painting became a way to help the client process emotions. In their art, tough days appeared darker and happier days were sparkly.
Over time, this new hobby became something that brought meaning to their life. Therapeutic recreation helped this child’s family – amongst many Holland Bloorview families – learn about the possibilities of what the future can hold.

A strengths-based approach to care
Therapeutic recreation at Holland Bloorview comes in all forms – like a game of wheelchair basketball, dance, playing in our sensory-friendly Snoezelen room, or becoming an artist. Through fun and play, kids enhance motor, social and cognitive functioning, build confidence, and develop coping skills.
These activities also help us see strengths instead of barriers, help kids turn goals into outcomes and build confidence. A child may come to Holland Bloorview initially self-isolating and disinterested in therapy. Eventually, they may set a goal of getting out of bed, learning more about their interests and discovering their strengths.
Holland Bloorview’s approach to therapeutic recreation is unique because we serve clients at all stages. We offer inpatient and outpatient services, and programs on-site at Holland Bloorview and in the community.
And we help clients feel confident building their independence and transferable life skills in the community outside of Holland Bloorview’s walls.

Lindsey’s story
I believe recreation is a right for all.
Play is crucial for mental, physical, and social wellbeing. Kids especially need play—it’s the way they learn and grow. It’s only right that every child has access to meaningful recreation and play. It’s our job to help reduce barriers that exist for kids with disabilities. These barriers can include physical accessibility, financial constraints, and limited support systems.
I chose therapeutic recreation as a career path because I always knew I wanted to help others. I’m so happy I did. Holland Bloorview has given me the opportunity to help kids with disabilities find their passions, independence and strengths.
Thank you to Holland Bloorview’s incredible Therapeutic Recreation team for everything you do to support kids and youth with disabilities!
