New clinical and research appointments at Holland Bloorview

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is pleased to announce the appointments of Dr. Laura McAdam as medical director for child development program (CDP) and Dr. Anne Kawamura as clinician investigator at Holland Bloorview’s research institute. Both physicians have - and continue to have - a lasting impact in the field of childhood disability.

Dr. Laura McAdam

Dr. Laura McAdam is the new medical director in the child development program while continuing to provide clinical care to neuromuscular and Retts clinic patients.   Dr. McAdam will also continue her clinical research program that’s focused on the long term impact of deflazacort treatment in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders.

For the last three years, Dr. McAdam has been co-leading a study with Dr. Barbara Gibson investigating the human aspects of care in the neuromuscular clinic. “She has led the clinical team in implementing the findings into day-to-day practices and in doing so she demonstrated her exceptional commitment to translating research into practice,” says Dr. Gibson, senior scientist and Bloorview Kids Foundation chair in childhood disability studies.  “Her dedication to leading the system in providing compassionate care to children and families is unparalleled.”

Dr. Anne Kawamura

Dr. Kawamura has been promoted to a clinician investigator at the Bloorview Research Institute. She is a developmental pediatrician, with a clinical focus on children who have complex medical and developmental disorders, especially those with cerebral palsy and neuromotor disabilities.

Her research focus involves the development of adaptive expertise in residents and teaching strategies that promote innovative problem solving skills early on in training. “Dr. Kawamura is dedicated to the art and science of teaching. Her talent in qualitative educational research will provide valuable insight into professional education practice and will have a profound impact on the future of healthcare education and teaching,” says Dr. Kathryn Parker, senior director, academic affairs and simulation lead.

Dr. Kawamura is also the program director of the Developmental Pediatrics Subspecialty Residency program at the University of Toronto. She is a graduate of the Education Scholars Program through the Centre for Faculty Development at the University of Toronto and has completed her Master’s of Health Professionals Education at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Holland Bloorview congratulates Drs. McAdam and Kawamura on their new roles and wishes them every success in their duties.
