An interview with Marg Rappolt, outgoing chair of the Holland Bloorview board of directors

In January 2015, Marg Rappolt joined the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital board of directors following a successful 36-year stint in public service. Since then, she has been the chair of the board of directors and a member of the governance committee, business and audit committee, quality committee, research, teaching and learning committee and a cross- appointee for the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation.

At this year’s annual general meeting on June 15, 2022, Marg will retire from Holland Bloorview, presiding over her final meeting as chair of the board. Holland Bloorview is profoundly grateful to Marg for her extraordinary work and leadership on the board. Her extensive experience as a strategic leader and her dedication over the years has helped us advance our status as a leader in care, teaching, learning and research in support of children with disabilities.

Recently, we interviewed Marg about her experience at Holland Bloorview.

How did you first become connected to Holland Bloorview?  Why did you want to get involved?

I had recently retired from the Ontario Public Service and knew I would be interested in a volunteer opportunity in the health and social service sector.  My public service career had focused largely on the social determinants of health, and I was very familiar with programs and supports for people with disabilities.  I was approached by the then president of Holland Bloorview - Sheila Jarvis, - about serving on the board of directors, and I jumped at the chance.

Of the many things that Holland Bloorview has accomplished during your time as board chair, what are you most proud of?

Holland Bloorview is coming out of an extraordinary time in health care delivery.  I think it's remarkable that the hospital has remained SO strong throughout this most challenging pandemic. Our success as an organization truly comes down to the vibrancy, commitment and capacity of our staff.  Board members have watched in awe as the organization has evolved, and team members have come together to learn new ways of serving kids and their families with compassion. Isn’t it remarkable that the hospital received TWO accreditation ratings of 100 per cent over the last five years?

I'm so proud of the role Holland Bloorview is playing in advocating on behalf of children's health needs within the province and the broader health system.  We’ve forged deep and lasting partnerships across the province, and our voices are being heard by partners and government leaders.

What kept you motivated to remain involved with Holland Bloorview?

I have the privilege of pretty much choosing how I spend my time and what I dedicate myself to. I couldn't have asked for a more rewarding and engaging experience than my board work with Holland Bloorview.  This is an organization where you see and hear about the results of your leadership work every week. There is nothing remote about our experience as board members.  You can’t help but feel like you are up close and personal with something meaningful. The work of the hospital team is complex and evolving. As a board member, the learning is endless, which I have adored.

In your opinion, what distinguishes Holland Bloorview from other healthcare facilities?

Many things.  First, the quality of our engagement with clients and families is unique and remarkable. The culture of our organization values the voice of those we serve like no other.  From our research work, to our bed-side care, we are deeply committed to authentic engagement and acting on the invaluable advice and stories of our families. It is ingrained in our culture and influences all that we do.

Secondly, the leadership culture of our organization is brave and humble at the same time.  Julia (president and CEO) and her team take their mandate for excellence and innovation so very seriously.  But, not themselves!  This is an organization without ego. It’s a delight and very refreshing to work with an organization so earnestly dedicated to its mission, and open to diverse voices and opinions.

What is your greatest hope for Holland Bloorview moving forward?

I am hopeful, and certain, that Holland Bloorivew will continue to design a creative and meaningful future for itself in the landscape of children's healthcare in the province.  The board will look forward to helping the organization chart its new strategic plan, building on the innovation and learning of the last many years.  I am hopeful that the hospital can continue to build critical partnerships across sectors and geographic boundaries to help serve the rehabilitation needs of our kids and families.

And I’m also hopeful and assured that our commitment to anti-Black and Indigenous racism will shape a future that removes more barriers for staff and the kids and families we serve. This is extremely important and I’m proud of how the organization has begun learning together to build a more inclusive future.

Is there anything else you’d like to say about your time as board chair?

It’s been a phenomenal honour to work with the Holland Bloorview team. I applaud all the family leaders, all staff and of course, the children and families we serve. I am wishing everyone nothing but the best in the years ahead.
