Holland Bloorview celebrates National Physiotherapy Month

We invite our community to celebrate the transformational impact physiotherapists have on the lives of the children and families we serve.

May is National Physiotherapy Month and during the week of May 27 to 31, 2024, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital will celebrate the vital role that the hospital’s nearly 40 physiotherapists and 12 physiotherapy assistants play in supporting each client’s journey whether it’s assisting in the transition back to home or ensuring a successful re-entry into daily activities including school, sports or games.

"As we celebrate National Physiotherapy Month, we want to shine a light on the invaluable role of physiotherapists (PTs) and physiotherapy assistants (PTAs) at Holland Bloorview,” says Heidi Schwellnus, collaborative practice leader. “Their dedication, expertise, and compassion empower our clients to reach their fullest potential, inspiring hope and transforming lives every day."

Meet members of the team

Whether it’s supporting a client to participate in an activity they enjoy or challenging them to reach new milestones, PTs and PTAs are passionate about supporting their client’s goals by using their specialized hands-on clinical skills to improve our clients’ overall quality of life.

“We’re inspired when we see patients succeed, gain skills and reach goals that were previously challenging. Seeing the joy it brings them and their families. Being a part of each child’s journey and aiding with the integration back home, ensuring a successful retransition into their daily activities, sports, games and school. The ability to work hands on in a setting where we bring value to children’s lives, creating a meaningful difference and helping them reach their full potential. Our own health and fitness journey was also a contributing factor into having the passion in this field.”

“I love to see the joy in my client’s faces when they learn a new skill or are able to do an activity or sport that they have been working hard to achieve! I have always had a passion for helping others and for physical activity. Physiotherapy seemed like the perfect career because it incorporated both of my passions.  I get to collaborate with my colleagues about our plan for the day and what clients we will be seeing. I work with clients to help them learn how to do different activities with their prosthetic device(s). We do activities such as walking, stairs, running, as well as playing different games such as bowling, soccer and obstacle courses, etc. I enjoy knowing that I am making a difference in my client’s lives. I find that they make an equal impact on my life as well.”

Stephen Wang: physiotherapist, brain injury rehabilitation team (BIRT) unit

“For me, what brings me joy is being able to be creative and coming up with fun activities with my clients.”
