Learning to use a BCI is a lot like learning to play an instrument. It takes training and practice. The more children practice, the better they can get at focusing and controlling the BCI. Our clinical program provides individual training and group practice opportunities for participants.

Eligibility Criteria

This program is for individuals:

  • with a physical disability who have restricted hand or arm movements
  • who can indicate yes/no answers using any means of communication (verbal, physical sign, eye gaze, etc.)
  • who can understand cause and effect
  • who can tolerate wearing a headset

New families are encouraged to contact our Program Coordinator for an intake conversation. A training session can then be scheduled with our Occupational Therapist (OT) and Research Engineer. After two training sessions, families can choose to participate in a home program with OT support and may wish to enroll their child in a BCI Therapeutic Recreation group.

Our Therapeutic Recreation Specialists offer three different formats for BCI group programming: inpatient, outpatient onsite and outpatient virtual. Participants have the opportunity to explore BCI applications with other BCI users. Together, kids can practice their BCI skills, create an art masterpiece, race remote control cars, play games and have fun.
