Remembering the incredible Laurie Hicks
On May 2, 2023, we said goodbye to our friend, Laurie Hicks, who passed away due to complications related to Multiple System Atrophy. Laurie was a courageous and dedicated leader whose legacy at Holland Bloorview and contributions to ensuring quality health care across the province will forever be remembered and cherished.
Laurie's professional journey began in business and information technology consulting, eventually leading her to transition into the health care sector. Fueled by her passion for health care, she served as a Vice President in an agency of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in Ontario. Laurie continued to make a difference by working with HealthCare CAN and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. She also played an active role as a board member of the University Health Network, serving on their quality committee.
Laurie's dedication to quality care drew her to join Holland Bloorview's board of trustees in 2013. Eager to contribute, she quickly became a valued member of the quality committee, forging a special bond with our hospital, staff, and clients.
Reflecting on Laurie's impact, CEO Julia Hanigsberg shares, “Holland Bloorview was so lucky to be guided by the wisdom and common sense of Laurie Hicks. As a member of the board and as the chair of the quality committee of the board she was meticulously prepared, kept management on our toes and, most importantly, was an unstoppable force for quality and safety for children with disabilities and their families.”
Laurie's commitment and love for Holland Bloorview extended beyond her tenure as a trustee. Together with her husband Tim, she generously supported programs and services because she knew they were invaluable to our clients and their families. Laurie also mobilized her community to give through our Foundation tribute programs.
Alison Hughes from the Holland Bloorview Foundation fondly remembers her relationship with Laurie and the passion Laurie held for creating a world of possibilities for children with disabilities. “When Tim threw her a surprise party in 2019, he asked friends and family to donate in her honour. In preparation for downsizing, they also sold furniture to friends and family but rather than accepting payment, asked that donations be made to support us. Now we are so grateful to be receiving gifts in Laurie’s memory, a final expression of love and support. We know she would be thrilled with the outpouring of gifts and we are grateful for her legacy at Holland Bloorview.”
Laurie's time with us and her unwavering commitment to exceptional healthcare for children and youth with disabilities will always be remembered at Holland Bloorview. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the numerous donations made in her memory, which will enable us to continue to provide exceptional care and honour Laurie's legacy.
