A book challenges the idea that people rise in America based on merit, and suggests the belief that we are 'self-made' creates friction between 'winners and losers' that harms the common good.

They 'just want to be able to go back to school every day, or play hockey again, or learn how to pace their day.'

Eight families worked together to create homes for their adult children with disabilities. 'I need to work on my own fear and let her grow,' one mother said.
