Holland Bloorview recently installed the first piece of accessible workout equipment in staff gym
In a meaningful step toward creating a more accessible and safer environment for all staff, Holland Bloorview has installed its first piece of accessible workout equipment in the staff fitness centre: a plinth table.

This adaptive equipment provides a raised, stable surface that makes stretching and exercise more accessible for staff with mobility challenges—promoting safety, comfort and independence.
The idea came from Holly Noon, a communicative disorders assistant on the brain injury rehab team and co-chair of the Disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). Noon advocated directly to people of culture and occupational health to improve accessibility in the staff gym, which previously had limited accessible equipment.
“The plinth table is ideal for staff with mobility challenges who may struggle to get down to the floor” said Noon. “It supports greater independence in the gym, makes the gym more accessible and also serves to enhance inclusivity, with hopes for more accessible equipment in the future.”

Patricia Bowler, manager, occupational health added, “having a plinth table in the gym provides an inclusive and accessible space for staff with disabilities, promoting comfort and support while they engage in physical activity. These adaptive surfaces enable a safer, more ergonomic environment, empowering all employees to participate fully, while supporting their wellbeing.”

“Every staff member deserves to feel empowered to care for their health and wellbeing in a space that is welcoming and accessible,” says Tracey Millar, vice president, people and culture. “We welcome our community to share suggestions and feedback so that together, we can continue building a workplace where everyone feels included and supported.”
