CBC'S flagship newscast, the National, and The Current highlight how BCIs are giving kids more agency
One of Seth's favourite activities is racing toy cars on a track. CBC National reporter, Tashauna Reid, dropped by Holland Bloorview to see first-hand out the teen is doing this and moving his wheelchair just with his thoughts, thanks to the advances of brain-computer interface (BCI). Tashauna spoke to his mom, Melanie Tolenksy, about how this technology has enabled Seth to engage in fun activities using the assistive technology since 2019 as part of Holland Bloorview's outpatient clinical BCI program - a world first. The reporter also spoke to Dr. Tom Chau, distinguished senior scientist and lead of BRI's PRISM lab, about the BCI research he has led over the past two decades, and what the future holds for this transformational technology.
CBC Radio's The Current also spoke to Dr. Chau about his research in pediatric BCIs and how this technology is creating new possibilities for children with disabilities within and beyond Holland Bloorview's walls.
