Holland Bloorview receives three Green Hospital Scorecard Awards from the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care

The hospital celebrates wins in water excellence, waste management and leadership for 2022

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is pleased to be presented with three Green Hospital Scorecard Awards by the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care in the following categories: Water Excellence, Waste Management and Leadership. As with previous years, these latest accolades represent Holland Bloorview’s commitment to environmental sustainability to protect the future health of the community, environment and planet.

A comprehensive health care benchmarking tool, the Green Hospital Scorecard (GHS) measures energy and water conservation, waste management and recycling, corporate commitment and pollution prevention. Participating hospitals report on their environmental and sustainability initiatives through an online questionnaire and the resulting scorecard summarizes their environmental performance relative to their peers.

Ian Rogers, Holland Bloorview’s senior director of facilities management, building and transportation services, explains how the hospital is able to continue building upon its success to provide sustainable facilities operations and infrastructure.

“The entire building and transportation services team is committed to environmental sustainability,” says Rogers. “Not only do we work together to manage and monitor the sustainability programs we have in place, we are also actively finding new ways to improve and optimize our hospital’s capacity to be a leader in green health care.”

Green initiatives currently implemented by the hospital include:

  • E-waste, battery and medical waste disposal programs
  • Using AI technology such as the Oscar Smart Recycling Assistant to improve waste diversion rates and encourage proper waste disposal
  • Rainwater collection system and native landscaping for water use efficiency and conservation
  • Upgraded building automation system (BAS) to help building operators manage energy use during extreme temperatures
  • Appointing ‘Green Team’ members to promote environmentally sustainable practices and organize special activities on Earth Day

Since the introduction of the Green Hospital Scorecard (GHS) program in 2014, Holland Bloorview has received recognition from the coalition, including being awarded Green Hospital of the Year in 2021 for the sixth consecutive year.
