Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do
April is Diversity Month and we’re honouring the incredible strength and richness that comes from embracing our cultural differences and learning about the experiences of others. It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the values that unite us and to celebrate the diverse voices that enrich our community.
At Holland Bloorview, we stand firm in our commitment to the values of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism (IDEAA). Embracing diversity makes us stronger, more innovative, and helps us better care for the children, youth and families we serve.
Throughout the month, some members of our community shared personal reflections, and insights, bringing to life our shared goal of fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, heard and respected:
“As we acknowledge Diversity Month at Holland Bloorview, we are reminded of the incredible strength and beauty that comes not only from embracing our differences, but learning about the experiences of others. This month is an opportunity for us to reflect on the values that unite us and to honour the diverse voices that enrich our community. We are proud to support our clients, families and staff in meaningful ways, whether by accommodating different cultural practices, acknowledging dates of faith-based significance, or creating opportunities to participate in events.” - Lorraine Thomas, manager, IDEAA
“Recognizing Diversity Month at Holland Bloorview is important, especially considering our current social context. As a queer person deeply invested in advancing equity and inclusion for all who have been historically marginalized, I feel we cannot be loud enough in our constellation of efforts right now. Our work is only truly effective when we are led by, and responsive to diverse intersectional identities and experiences, both within the workplace and in our work with clients and families. Holland Bloorview recognizes that working toward more equitable relations is a life-long endeavour and the strength of diversity is fundamental to this everyday practice!” - Stephanie Moynagh, family support specialist, client and family integrated care
Holland Bloorview advocates fiercely for inclusion in the media. “Diversity in media helps include voices that are overlooked and gives people different perspectives.”- Julian, Holland Bloorview ambassador
"Diversity Month is a time to honour cultural heritage and celebrate the beauty of our differences. At Holland Bloorview, we do more than recognize diversity — we live it every day. I'm proud to be part of a team that embraces people from all cultural backgrounds. Holland Bloorview fosters safe spaces for staff to connect and learn from one another. Our organization stands as a shining example of commitment to creating an inclusive, diverse, equitable, accessible and anti-racist environment where everyone is treated with respect and fairness. I'm excited to be part of celebrating diversity for years to come." - Dezarre Williams-Graham, executive assistant
“Awareness days or months dedicated to disabilities are crucial because our society is fundamentally ableist. In many aspects of life—education, social interactions, and personal experiences—people with disabilities are often excluded and underrepresented. These awareness periods provide essential opportunities for people to learn about and engage with different realities, fostering understanding and inclusion.
All too often, once the awareness period ends, the attention and efforts fade away, and people tend to forget the importance of ongoing support and representation. Representation should be strong and consistent. We must continue to use awareness periods to create inclusive spaces where everyone can share their experiences. At Holland Bloorview, our work and commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and anti racism takes place every day of the year.” - Giseli Bignardi, family leader
“Now more than ever it is important to recognize Diversity Month. It’s an opportunity for Holland Bloorview to publicly and proudly state our commitment to promoting awareness and understanding of different cultures, and to building an inclusive, diverse, equitable, accessible and anti-racist environment that treats all individuals with respect and fairness. Embracing diversity will make us better partners, better providers, better caregivers and better colleagues. In a world of heavy news, political tensions and uncertainty about the future, I am proud to be part of an organization that strives to create space, both literally and figuratively, that includes everyone and honours the diverse voices, languages, cultural practices, identities and traditions of our broad community.” - Joanne Maxwell, vice president, experience, transformation and social accountability
While Diversity Month comes to a close, our journey of learning continues. Guided by the principles of IDEAA and the vision in our HB2030 strategic plan, we remain committed to building an inclusive environment where children, youth, families and staff of all backgrounds can grow, thrive and feel a strong sense of belonging.
