Confronting anti-Black racism - reflection by Sophia Okyere-Oduro
"Holland Bloorview is making significant progress in its anti-racism efforts by implementing mandatory anti-racism training. This training focuses on understanding the history and impact of racism, especially anti-Black racism, and its effects on the healthcare system, which is crucial for ensuring safe, quality care and effective leadership.
Initiatives such as the Black Staff Experience Report and the Manager’s Debrief Toolkit provide valuable opportunities to incorporate these important lessons into our daily practices. They facilitate team reflection, promote accountability, and help address any harm that may have occurred in real time. These initiatives play a vital role in aligning the hospital’s principles with its operational reality, ultimately fostering a more inclusive environment that positively impacts all staff, clients and families.
Holland Bloorview is showing commendable courage and compassion in its efforts to build an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Anti-Racism space. The next step is to turn these values into concrete actions, such as developing policies, allocating budgets, implementing staff retention strategies, and ensuring representation in executive leadership. As the Anti-Racism Implementation Specialist, I hope to see anti-racism policies integrated into the hospital's core values, rather than being treated as a one-off initiative. Ensuring ongoing transparency and providing adequate resources to address the needs of Black staff, clients, and families are essential steps in transforming good intentions into meaningful change.” - Sophia Okyere-Oduro, anti-racism implementation specialist
