Confronting anti-Black racism - reflection by Melissa Edwards

Melissa Edwards“It has been humbling to witness the hospital’s transformative journey through the Roadmap to Confront Anti-Black racism, especially as a member of the Foundation team. This isn't just a clinical or administrative shift. It is a commitment from our leadership, scientists, clinicians, researchers, and Foundation team to dismantle systemic barriers.

Central to this evolution is our Donor Code of Conduct, which serves as a vital bridge between our values and our philanthropic community. By embedding the principles of IDEAA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism) into our donor relations, we ensure that our commitment to a safe, inclusive environment for Black employees, clients, and families is upheld by everyone who come through our doors including our supporters.

Seeing these values move from symbolic gestures to concrete actions like the EMBARK program for Black scientists and our independent reporting processes, reinforces my pride in what we do. I am honored to raise the funds that sustain this work and ensure Holland Bloorview remains a place where every member of our community feels recognized, valued, safe and a sense of belonging.” - Melissa Edwards, director, Gratitude and Philanthropyand member of BERG
