Frequently asked questions

What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

Applied behaviour analysis is an evidence-based approach to understanding how people learn and how their environment influences behaviour. ABA uses individualized, measurable strategies to help children and youth build meaningful skills that support greater independence, communication, flexibility, social participation, emotional regulation, and success in everyday life.

Does my child need an autism diagnosis?

Not necessarily. A formal autism diagnosis is not required to participate in our privately funded individual or group services, provided the program is appropriate for your child’s needs.

How are goals selected?

Goals are selected collaboratively based on your child’s individual strengths, needs, priorities, and everyday experiences. The process may include caregiver input, direct observation, skills assessment, and discussion of situations that are currently challenging or important to your family. Goals are then individualized so they are meaningful, measurable, and fuctional.

What is the difference between group therapy and individual coaching?

Group-based services provide opportunities to learn and practice skills alongside peers in a structured and supportive environment. Depending on the program, areas of focus may include communication, flexibility, collaboration, problem-solving, self-advocacy, social interaction, and navigating everyday situations.

Individual behaviour coaching/1:1 ABA therapy provides more personalized support focused specifically on the child or youth goals. Sessions can address individual barriers, build specific skills, and allow strategies to be adapted based on progress.

How does parent/caregiver coaching work?

Parent and caregiver coaching is integrated into behaviour coaching whenever appropriate. Caregivers are important members of the treatment team and can help skills carry over beyond sessions. Coaching may include discussing strategies, reviewing progress, problem-solving situations that occur at home or in the community, and helping caregivers confidently support their child’s goals in everyday life.

Can we use Ontario Autism Program funding?

Yes. Our ABA services and programs are designed to align with the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis and relevant Ontario Autism domains. ABA is recognized as an eligible core clinical service within the OAP. Depending on your child’s funding allocation and the specific service, OAP funding may be used towards eligible services.

How long are services?

The length of service depends on the type of support being accessed and the individual goals. Group programs typically run for approximately 6-12 weeks depending on the specific program. For individual coaching/1:1 ABA therapy, we generally recommend beginning with a minimum commitment of approximately 6 weeks. The overall length of service may vary depending on the goals identified, the level of support required, progress, and whether additional goals are developed. Progress is reviewed throughout service so that recommendations can change as the child/youth’s needs change.

Are services available virtually?

Yes. Virtual appointments are available when appropriate for the individual’s goals and needs. Virtual sessions can work well for caregiver coaching, consultation, planning and certain individual goals. However, in-person sessions may provide additional opportunities to observe and practice skills in real-life situations, particularly when goals involve social interaction, community participation, daily living skills, or other hands-on learning opportunities. The most appropriate format can be discussed during intake.

How do I register or make a referral?

Getting started is easy. Parents, caregivers and other referral sources can complete our referral form to provide some initial information about the child/youth, their goals, and the type of service they are interested in. Behavioral Coaching and Intake Form Once the referral has been received, we will review the information and connect with your to discuss next steps and determine which service may be the best fit.  Once you have completed the form, please email to amodrovsky@hollandbloorview.ca
