The spina bifida/spinal cord team uses a multidisciplinary, family-centred approach. Clients are seen annually (or as frequently as necessary) in a clinic setting by various professionals as determined by the needs of each client.
The spina bifida/spinal cord injury team provides clinical assessment and intervention by a developmental pediatrician, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, speech-language pathologist, social worker, psychologist and life skills coach, as well as ambulatory care nurses and physiotherapists. For clients who live in Toronto, consultation between clinic visits is available as required.
The team can also access medical consultants in the areas of orthopedics and urology. To enable the co-ordination of care for each child, the spina bifida/spinal cord team communicates with other involved partners such as schools, community services, other medical facilities and government agencies.
