Story

I dare to believe in myself more each day

My name is Zen.

From making new friends and finding joy in the little things, to building my confidence step by step, I enjoy life my way.

I feel the most at peace swimming at the beach and going on long drives. They give me a sense of freedom. The same freedom I feel when using brain computer interface (BCI) technology.

Freedom and empowerment

When I joined Holland Bloorview as part of the BCI research program, it truly transformed my life. It has brought a sense of relief and hope to my family and me.

BCI helps kids with limited speech and movement use the power of their brains to do every day kid things. For me, that looks like painting, playing video games, expressing my thoughts, and connecting with others.

This journey gave me confidence, trust, and a voice. BCI gave me a level of independence that means everything to me. It allows me to express myself. I feel heard and appreciated.

Since joining the Holland Bloorview community, my life changed in ways I didn’t expect. I became an ambassador because I want people to understand how life-changing Holland Bloorview can be. As an ambassador, I have a voice. Not just for myself, but for others who feel unheard.

My journey has been full of strength, discovery and meaningful relationships. And every day, I discover more ways to dare.

I dare to trust others. I dare to build connections.

I dare to believe in myself more each day.
