Cosplaying for possibility

Heather proudly calls herself a nerd—so it’s no surprise that she is transforming into Wonder Woman this summer in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Heather is one of the many super heroes taking part in the SuperPower 5K, Toronto’s only cosplay run. Presenting sponsor FAN EXPO Canada and superpowered partners iRun and Kardia support the run. At the event, participants will embrace their superpowers in a virtual or in-person 5K or 10K race. This year, participants are raising funds to help Holland Bloorview build a world of possibilities for kids and youth with disabilities.

Heather, an avid runner, shares why she’s doing the SuperPower 5K and what she is most excited about:

Why are you supporting Holland Bloorview?

I found out about Holland Bloorview through the SuperPower 5K run. My first impression of the hospital is that they care deeply for children with disabilities. People with disabilities are some of the most marginalized in the world—and children with disabilities even more so. Before signing up for this run I didn't think I knew anyone who had visited Holland Bloorview. After sharing my fundraiser page on social media, a follower of mine reached out to tell me that Holland Bloorview was able to diagnose her son with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The hospital continues to provide her with resources to this day. I'm so happy they were able to help her and her family. I'm really proud to raise funds for Holland Bloorview.

What are you most excited about for the 5K?

I am most excited to be surrounded by other nerdy runners! This will be my first ever official run and the idea of running alongside others who do what I usually do as a solitary hobby is so exciting to me! It's also likely since they're all participating in a costumed run that they're big nerds like me! I hope I can make some friends at the event.

What are your goals for the SuperPower 5K?

My goals for the SuperPower 5K are really simple: to finish it—haha—and have a good time doing it! I'm sure as I become more experienced in running I can create more specific goals, but honestly just showing up and having a good time is all I can ask for.

Will you be dressing up as any of your favourite superheroes?

I WILL be dressing up! I'll be going as Wonder Woman. I think she's a great role model with an iconic and eye-catching costume. She's strong and brave while also embracing her femininity. She's a real role model for me and so many others.
