Summer joy looks different for every child. For some, it’s lying in the sand for the first time. For others it’s celebrating a milestone, exploring somewhere new or spending time with loved ones.

Behind many of these moments is more than just fun in the sun, its access. When barriers are removed, children and youth can pursue what brings them joy, confidence and connection.

This summer, Holland Bloorview clients shared the moments that made their season unforgettable.

We asked five clients and their families to tell us what “joy has no limits” means to them.

Willow, taking flight!

While boarding a plane might be routine for some, Willow’s family approached it as a new adventure filled with preparation and excitement.

On a trip to Alberta, Willow got to experience the amazing views of the Bighorn lookout.

Her mom says the accessibility desk at Pearson Airport helped make the experience possible, easing some of the stress that can comes with travelling with mobility equipment.

Though there were challenges on the way home, the trip highlighted the importance of accessible travel and the freedom it can create for families who want to explore the world together. 

Key takeaway: It’s important to pay attention to what airline you fly with and what provinces may not have accessibility desks.

Most importantly, Willow had fun reaching new heights on her first airplane ride.

Vinny, freedom in the water

Vinny finds joy in everyday moments year-round but summer remains his favourite season. From meeting new animals and spending time at the beach to playing with his brother and sister, summer gives him more opportunities to explore, play and experience the world at his own pace. 

If there's one place where Vinny feels most free, it's in the water. His family says there seem to be fewer barriers when he's swimming, giving him the chance to move, explore and challenge himself in ways that feel natural and independent. Watching his confidence grow in the water has become one of the highlights of their summer. 

And after a day of adventure, there's one summer staple Vinny never turns down. As his family jokes, "Vinny has yet to meet an ice cream flavour he doesn't enjoy." 

Gavi, at the water’s edge

Summer and the beach often go hand in hand, but beaches aren't always designed with accessibility in mind.

For Gavi, access mats leading directly to the water transformed the experience. Instead of staying on the sidelines, she could join friends along the shore and fully participate in the day. Gavi describes the experience as one of inclusion and freedom, two things every child deserves when spending time outdoors.

Gavi didn’t stop there, putting a ventilator on a floating raft gave her the full waterside experience. With supportive friends beside her, summer became a season of connection, adventure and memories in the making.

Avery, the joy of summer traditions

For Avery, joy doesn't need to be complicated.

Summer means spending more time with siblings and making memories.

Whether it's going on rides at Canada’s wonderland or experiencing the thrill of FIFA in the city, the season is filled with opportunities to be together.

And, of course, there are summer essentials.

Avery's recipe for the perfect s'more? “Extra chocolate and a soft marshmallow that's warm but not too hot.”

Sometimes joy can be found in the simplest moments.

Angelo, a milestone worth celebrating

Graduation marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

This summer, Angelo celebrated an important educational milestone - high school graduation and with the Self-Advocacy Award! He celebrated with a Chinese food buffet and watching Canada play Switzerland in the World Cup. 

His next step is to join Project SEARCH at a long-term care home where he will help residents with recreational cooking and customer service. 

Even with this new beginning, Angelo hasn’t missed a moment to spend time in the sun: “It feels great hanging out with my family and hanging out by a lake and camping together.”

Summer memories powered by inclusion

As summer winds down, these stories show us that joy isn't defined by one experience. It's found in milestones reached, adventures shared and moments of connection with family and friends. When children and youth have access to the spaces, activities and opportunities that matter to them, they can participate fully, build confidence and create memories that last long after the season ends.
