Dr. Deryk Beal named this year's SLP Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Deryk Beal has been named this year’s recipient of theDistinguished Service Award for his dedication, service, and commitment to thefield of communication disorders and swallowing. This award is sponsored by theSpeech-Language Pathology alumni association at the University of Toronto. Theaward recognizes University of Toronto Department of Speech-Language Pathologyalumni who have made outstanding contributions to the field. The AlumniAssociation selects one recipient annually who excels in at least two of thefollowing areas of achievement: Academic, clinical services, and/ or promotionof the profession.

Dr. Beal is recognized as an expert in the neurobiology ofspeech and language and the treatment of communication disorders. He haspublished in high impact and prestigious journals including NeuroImage, Cortex,Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Journal of Speech, Language andHearing Research and has over 120 conference presentations and abstracts. Hehas secured over $1 million in research awards and grants including CIHR, NSERCand CFI. Dr. Beal has trained many speech-language pathologists and speechscientists to date who have progressed to successful careers in education,rehabilitation, medicine, technology and academia. His work has been profiledin national and international media including the Globe and Mail, Radio Canada,CBC and BBC.

Dr. Beal received his Distinguished Service Award at the University of Toronto's Speech-Language Pathology Department’s annual Awards and RecognitionCelebration on Friday, November 17, 2017.Several of his students were also recognized at this eventfor their stellar year in securing scholarships and distinguished.Congratulations Dr. Beal on this well-deserved honour!
