The augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) stream serves children and youth whose speech does not meet their daily communication needs, and who require tools and strategies to support their face-to-face and written communication.
Our team of speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, communicative disorders assistants and assistive technology consultants works collaboratively with clients, their families and community partners to provide goal-setting, assessment and training of communication tools and strategies. Our services are provided at Holland Bloorview, in client homes and in the community.
The communication and writing aids service (CWAS) is an expanded level clinic with the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) of the Ontario Ministry of Health. Our clinicians can authorize ADP funding assistance for eligible clients.
Referral Criteria and Forms
Referrals are accepted from: physicians, nurse practitioners, speech language pathologists, occupational, therapists physiotherapists and psychologists.
Please note: All referrals must go through a screening process that includes an initial phone call with the caregiver to discuss the referral, review eligibility, and share information about the Communication and Writing Aids Service (CWAS). Following this call, consultation with community partners, virtual appointments or shared video may be required to confirm eligibility and guide next steps.
