The Division of Developmental Paediatrics at the University of Toronto offers a two-year subspecialty residency training program based at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. This program received full accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2007. In 2009, Developmental Paediatrics transitioned to a discipline with certification by examination.

The objectives of the University of Toronto program are to provide trainees with expertise in diagnosing, managing and supporting children with a wide range of congenital or acquired disorders affecting development and behaviour and understanding their individual trajectories. Conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, genetic disorders, neuromuscular disorders, spina bifida, learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are encountered in training. Candidates are supported in developing skills in counseling and advocacy by interacting and working in teams with other professionals and community organizations. Training is based at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital; however, community and other tertiary care sites such as Surrey Place Centre,Toronto East General Hospital, Eglinton West Satellite Clinic, St. Michael's Hospital, and Sick Kids are utilized to complete required rotations. In addition to the clinical experience, trainees are expected to develop a research project in an area within Developmental Paediatrics with support from the program’s research advisor and research trained faculty. Trainees are also actively involved in educational activities for medical students and residents.

We also accept applications from international medical graduates who have completed a paediatric residency and are interested in a two-year fellowship in Developmental Paediatrics. Fellows in this program receive the same training as subspecialty residents and are expected to complete on call duties.
