We are working with a private company to develop brain activity sensing applications. This study will evaluate a simple task related to focused attention with up to 20 participants wearing the Muse sensing headband and another electrical brain activity sensing system.
The Childhood Cerebral Palsy (CP) Integrated Neuroscience Discovery Network “CP-NET” is designed to bring together children with CP, their families, and clinical and basic scientists to foster neuroscience discoveries through integrated translation. Understanding the underlying neuroscience mechanisms, pathology, physiology, and genomics of CP is critical to developing improved treatments.  In particular there is a critical need to link translationally-oriented neuroscience research with cutting-edge neurorehabilitation approaches for CP.

For this study, we are looking into studying muscle signals during normal walking. We will be trying to separate motion signals from muscle signals in order to identify muscle activations.


We are trying to determine if we can deliver a feeding intervention program using videoconferencing technology. We hope to learn if parent coaching around feeding strategies will lead to a change in difficult mealtime behaviours in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We have learnt that children with disabilities and weight management and wellness needs, along with their families often experience challenges and difficulties accessing health and wellness support and/or weight programs.
Physical activity improves social life, quality of life, and health. Some children and teens with physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy do not try as many different activities as other youth. One reason might be that they have low balance confidence. Balance confidence is a person’s feelings about his or her balance during certain activities or settings. Right now, there is no reliable way to measure balance confidence in youth with cerebral palsy.


This study is being conducted to determine parents’ experiences and needs in transitioning their child with CP to developmental/ rehabilitation services, like those at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
Our genomics study will identify and characterize genes that confer risk to autism spectrum and related neurodevelopmental disorders.

We would like to measure brainwaves synchrony with electroencephalography (EEG) between non-verbal child/youth with complex disability, their primary caregivers, and music therapist during music therapy and storytelling sessions.
The study aims to determine the safety and tolerability of intranasal oxytocin, its effect on quality of life and anxiety, and whether or not it can improve core symptoms of ASD such as social cognition and responsiveness.

The contraction of muscles can be detected by a system called mechanomyogram (MMG). This study aims to investigate ways in which information from unwanted muscle contractions during a specific line drawing task can enhance detection of intention. We will recruit a control group of typically developing children as well as a group of children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy. An MMG signal of main arm muscles will be recorded during the line drawing task. The signal recorded will then be used to create a prediction model of the movement performed by the participant. This research will eventually allow children and youth with disabilities to use their intentional muscle contractions to communicate and interact with their environment, even in the presence of excessive undesired muscle contractions.

Music is a positive experience associated with motivation, reward, attention, and mood, all factors which facilitate motor learning. In adult stroke patients, studies have shown that making music as part of hand/arm rehabilitation programs (e.g. playing drums/keyboard) may be more effective than conventional approaches. We are conducting research to explore the potential of these music-supported therapies in children. For this purpose, we have developed “MusicMaster”, a music-themed video game intervention that adapts a music-supported rehabilitation protocol originally designed for adult stroke patients.

Following lower-limb amputation, patients suffer from sensory loss within the prosthesis/residuum complex. This leads to diminished proprioception and balance which are important toward achieving safe and efficient mobility.
To evaluate the efficacy of the Social ABC’s intervention program on improving language/communication skills and positive emotion sharing in toddlers with clinically significant concerns or a diagnosis of ASD.
The purpose of this study is disseminate and evaluate this sustainable, cost-effective, community-based very early intervention program for infants/toddlers at risk for social communication challenges to a childcare setting. Staff are trained to identify early signs of autism and social communication disorders, and learn the Social ABCs intervention strategies to in their classroom.

Artificial limbs are a matter of necessity for people with lower-limb amputations. However, due to a lack of affordable and functional technologies, there is a large unmet need in low and middle income countries. With key research partners around the world, we are developing affordable mobility technologies to reduce disability.
The goal of the study is to investigate running in children with lower limb absence using running prostheses as compared to conventional prostheses.
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent cause of physical disability in children in Canada, affecting 2-2.5/1000 children every year. This project aims to establish a Canadian Cerebral Palsy Registry, to provide an epidemiologic profile of CP in Canada reflecting the full heterogeneity of the disorder and provide a platform for population-based research on CP. It will serve to estimate the incidence, prevalence and distribution of cerebral palsy in Canada, while facilitating research in this field.
Children with CP often have difficulty with more advanced physical skills, like running and jumping. These skills help children to participate fully in physical activities at home and in school.

Brain-computer interfaces allow individuals with disabilities to communicate using only their thoughts. However, long-term BCI performance is often compromised by changes in the mental state of the BCI user.
Children and youth with profound and multiple disabilities are often unable to interact with their immediate surroundings and control relevant stimuli due to their limited response (motor) repertoire.
Our team would like to learn about transportation experiences of youth with and without disabilities. We would particularly like to know what it is like to navigate public transportation independently and / or the process of obtaining a driver's license.


We are asking children and youth with cerebral palsy to help us learn about if they hurt and if it affects them. This study will help us better understand about if and how much pain is felt by children and youth with cerebral palsy.
The aims of this six-month, mixed-methods research project are: (1) to define the nature of the Spiral Garden program, including its major intents, elements, and ways of operating, and to examine whether (and to what extent, and in what ways) there has been an evolution in the intent of the program since its inception, and (2) to gather information to describe the nature of the cultural, social, and physical environment of the Spiral Garden. We are interested in the intended nature of this environment (as determined by interviews with expert staff members from a mix of disciplines/backgrounds, and through examination of archival Spiral Garden documents produced over the years), and whether this vision is achieved (as determined by observation of the sessions and through the use of a standardized measure of environmental qualities).

This study will help Holland Bloorview know what service providers, clients and caregivers think about connect2care, Holland Bloorview's new client and family portal that was launched in January 2015. The portal lets clients and families look at their health records and lets them message their service providers.
We will study the needs, challenges, and approaches used to position preschoolers with disabilities for bathing activities at home. Focus groups with groups of parents and therapists will give us a practical way to evaluate and develop better bath products for young children with seating needs.
