Get Up and Go (Persistent pediatric pain service)

This service is a rehabilitation program aimed at helping your child regain function and return to usual activities.

The Get up and Go Persistent Pediatric Pain Service is a rehabilitation program aimed at helping your child regain function and return to usual activities.

It consists of a two week inpatient stay followed by a two week day patient program. During this time, the team will work together on a plan that is right for your child in order to reach these goals.

What is persistent pain and how can we help?

Persistent pain (lasting longer than three months) takes a team to successfully treat it. As Canada’s first inpatient interdisciplinary pediatric pain service, we are committed to working together with you and your family to create a plan that is right for you.

Service criteria - persistent pediatric pain service

The following information is to assist practitioners navigate the referral process for the Get up and go: persistent pediatric pain service at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.  

Only referrals from a chronic pain clinic in Ontario will be considered. Referrals are assessed and prioritized for children and families with persistent pain, and who meet the following criteria:

  • All reasonable investigations have been complete
  • Reasonable and accessible pain treatments have been tried with insufficient success
  • Pain has a significant impact on some aspects of life including self-care, sleep, mobility, school attendance, leisure activities, relationships and/or mood
  • Client and family have consented to the referral 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Clients who require opioid weaning
  • Conversion Disorder
  • Psychosis   

Typical diagnoses include:

  • CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome)
  • Widespread pain with sleep disturbance
  • Chronic abdominal pain 

Referrals are particularly encouraged when the child has:

  • Exacerbations of persistent pain that resulted in Emergency Department admissions
  • Complex psychosocial influences that affect pain behaviour which require specialized assessment and care 

Get up and go:  persistent pediatric pain service will require:

  • Completion of the referral form
  • Accompanying documents where appropriate

Note: Incomplete forms may delay the referral process.  Upon discharge from the Get up and go: persistent pediatric pains service, the referring physician/provider will receive a written report with recommendations for ongoing management and a follow-up appointment will be made with the referring chronic pain clinic.
