The Chronic Pain Assessment Toolbox for Children with Disabilities

This Chronic Pain Assessment Toolbox for Children with Disabilities is a compendium of resources based upon high quality research evidence. The Toolbox is intended to support the assessment of chronic pain in pediatric disability clinical practice.

These open access eLearning modules are designed to provide a general introduction to the Toolbox, highlight the tools in use at Holland Bloorview and end with a case study showcasing the use of the Toolbox in practice. Toolbox Background

An in-depth review of the methodology behind the Toolbox development: a structured review of clinical practice guidelines, a systematic review of the pediatric chronic pain assessment tool literature and expert consensus of  assessment tools.


Clinical Practice Points

Alongside the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario's Best Practice Guideline for the Assessment and Management of Pain (3rd edition), the practice points guide evidence-informed decision making when assessing chronic pain in children with disabilities.

Chronic Pain Assessment Tools

15 pediatric chronic pain assessment tools are included in the Toolbox: 7 chronic pain interference and 8 chronic pain coping. Detailed descriptions of each tool are presented alongside information on availability and accessibility procedures.


Implementation Supports Manual

Based upon the Knowledge to Action Cycle (Graham et al., 2006), the Implementation Supports Manual provides a step-by-step guide for the adoption, implementation and evaluation of the Toolbox at your organization.
