Current communication devices for individuals with severe disabilities often have difficulty distinguishing between intentional and inadvertent activations. Pre-movement brain activity may aid in this elusive discrimination task but has not been exploited yet. This project investigates the utility of brain activity preceding voluntary movement, for detecting the intention of self-initiated fine movements.

Participate in this study

Your participation in the study will help us develop a communication method for individuals who are unable to communicate.

Who can participate

Any boy or girl who is 16 years of age or older, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision, and normal hearing, normal arm/hand/finger functionality, You must not be receiving psychoactive medication such as anti-depressants or analgesics. You cannot have any health conditions that may affect the measurements or your ability to perform various tasks. These conditions include, but are not limited to: degenerative disorders, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic disorders, trauma-induced brain injury, respiratory conditions, drug and alcohol-related conditions, and psychiatric disorders. You must be able to communicate in English.

What's Involved

Study participants will attend up to 3 data collection sessions, each approximately 2-3 hours in length.  The sessions will be booked over 1-2 months at convenient times for you. All sessions will be held at Holland Bloorview. During the session we will measure brain and muscle signals.

We will provide you with parking pass for each visit you make so you can park for free at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. At the end of each session, you will receive a $35 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation.
